My pen hovers above the cheap postcard. I need to update Gwen, but I’m unsure where to begin.

Despite everything, I’m glad Jane and I decided to come to Rome for our vacation.

Setting. I’ll start with setting.

We’re in Rome, sitting at the Caffe Accademia. We’re right around the corner from the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.

Jane’s currently busy flirting with Andras, a Hungarian activist. He’s trying to coerce her into attending a rally tonight. She’s wavering.

I pause, panic starting to rise as I watch her.

Sometimes, because of who we are, I fear for our lives.
