She’s not the one whose blood runs through my veins like a river, not the one who brought me into the world, screaming.
No, she’s the one who nursed me when I got chickenpox at the age of eight. The one who taught me to dance on the orange tiles of our kitchen to Greatest Hits Radio Lancashire. The one who held me while I was wracked with convulsive sobs, realising the one who brought me into the world was never going to be good enough to look after me.
One mother gave me life. The other gave me my life.
