Departure

Departure

By Simon Hole

He stood at the desk, reading and rereading her note, his mind racing.

She can’t just leave. How will I survive?

She can’t just leave. I can be hard sometimes, but how was I to know she was unhappy? What did I miss?

She can’t just leave. What kind of terrible person am I that she felt like she couldn’t talk to me about it? How am I supposed to know what to do next?

He lowered himself into a chair and spoke out loud to the empty office. “You have to give me two weeks’ notice. You can’t just leave!”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Beautiful, Simon! You thoroughly fooled me again with that ending! Way to go.

Fun. I was sucked in and tricked, and I love that. Also, impressed by the effectiveness of repeating whole phrases in a story of just 101 words. Clever & well crafted.

Thank you all. I’ve had a great summer and am ready to get back to the keyboard on a regular basis.
