Kayla rummages the garbage bins behind the grocery store. Nothing to eat. It’s ten degrees outside and the only clothing to warm her is a thick, worn-out frock.
Two days without food, Kayla enters the store and grabs a bag of chips from the first shelf. Within seconds, a clerk grabs her wrist.
The police arrive within minutes but she refuses to answer questions. She refuses to answer at the station too. They lock her up, promise to arraign her in the morning. They feed her a bologna sandwich and canned tomato soup. She hasn’t slept under a blanket in weeks.
