Detonation

September 18, 2024 6 Comments

By Ava

My phone rang—really loudly—in the middle of class. Mr. Sheedy glared at me. Lasers were protruding from his eyes and staring down his long, pointed nose. His mouth took the shape of a child’s when they first tasted a lemon. The grey hairs on top of his head stood on end, as if he had suddenly experienced the magic of static energy. The beige complexion of his wrinkled skin became a deep shade of beetroot. He was a human bomb, set to detonate when given the signal.

My phone was that signal.

So much for asking for that extension.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Very well crafted. The descriptions of Mr. Sheedy put me in your chair, no way would I ask for an extension now.

I think I had that teacher in high school. Nicely drawn picture of the “human bomb.”

I enjoyed the phrasing of each description of Mr. Sheedy, and thought the whole scenario very funny.
