DEVOTION

By Dianne Hendricks

Through that long summer, she cared for him, he who had been her life for fifty years.

“You are a saint, Mom,” said Pearl. “Where do you find the strength?”

“It’s not hard,” Millie replied, gazing down at the cadaverous, yellowed form that had once been her husband. “I love him.”

Pearl slipped out of the dark bedroom to fix her mother a cup of tea.

Millie long regarded the man in the bed, then whispered, “Why the hell won’t you die, you selfish old man?”

Pearl, standing in the doorway, gasped as the cup of tea crashed to the floor.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Wonderful story. Well-written from the beginning sentence and the end was both surprising and inevitable.
