Dew Drops

Dew Drops

By Valerie Brown

Silken threads sparkle in the morning light. Droplets of dew refract the gleaming beams, spreading shafts of slender rainbows against the lush foliage. It’s quiet out. Just the wind and a few shifting clouds. This isn’t a bad way to go—tangled amongst the spider’s sticky needlework—at least it’ll be quick.

Small vibrations shimmy across the web. He must be coming. I close my eyes, then open them again, afraid of losing my last glimpse of this life. The spider’s fangs sink into my soft abdomen. My body grows numb, heavy.

Dew drops fall, shattering rainbows, encasing me in darkness.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Caught in a glistening, reticular trap–it’s enough to give any creature a resurging case of arachnophobia! Very dewy and nicely worded.
