Disco Ball at the Center of the World

February 18, 2025 5 Comments

By Audrey-Anna Gamache

“Come on, let’s spin.” She grabs my hands and pulls me into the middle of the skating rink, below the disco ball that sparkles purples, pinks, and blues.

I tell her I don’t know how to skate. The one-size-too-big rental rollerblades have already begun chafing the back of my ankles.

But the girl looks at me with a smile lined with braced teeth. “That’s okay, that’s okay. You’ll learn.” Her hands locked with mine, we gain momentum, spinning round and round until the skating rink blurs, and it’s only us and the disco ball. Forget about the rest of the world.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nostalgia at its finest, mixed with scents of homecoming dresses and sweaty hands. Smells of days old feet and musty ancient carpet that slows and steadies. A slice of escapism. Love it.

Most of us have had moments like this although the circumstances may differ. Nicely done.

Well done. A great memory portrayed quite well. Feel like I’m there.
