Doppelgangers

October 6, 2025 9 Comments

By Angelo Allito

Isaac came home earlier today. But what came home is not my brother, rather—his doppelganger. He hasn’t spoken a word to me, not revealing where they sent him for his ‘special’ vacation. His smile is now stiff, losing the softness that he was once so proud of. His eyes are dull, staring at me in a silence that only I seem to mind. He even volunteers to lead the rosary, making Mama prouder.

Papa invites our relatives over for dinner. He is the proudest among us. I hear him boldly say to Uncle: “The camp worked. Praise be to God.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Very sad and well-written story. I hope Isaac gets out of that family as they’ve already tried to take his soul.

Wow. You told a tragic story (that’s all too real) expertly. Well done

Yikes. A camp to brainwash those with “undesirable” traits. Great job in conveying so much in so few words!
