I watched my daughter take an animal cracker from the box and drop it into the drain in the concrete floor.
“Baby,” I said, “you’re going to clog the drain, and then where will Daddy empty the dehumidifier?”
“I heard Grandma say that Grandpa went to Hell,” she said proudly.
I marched over to close the hinged lid and peered into the void. When I saw the inner works of the pipe contract, like a swallowing throat, I grabbed my child and ran toward the staircase.
Glancing back at the drain, I saw a tongue wiggle out and snap it shut.
Reminds me of my flash, “The Imaginary Librarian.”
