Dreamville

Dreamville

By Gary Davison

I’m trapped in a dream. A woman with two kids pretends she’s my wife. They even have me Photoshopped into their family photos.

There’s a Shih Tzu they say is mine—they’re lying assholes.

This fictitious wife makes appointments for me to see a psychiatrist. I refuse to go; she pretends she’s concerned.

When I awake, they’ll all go away—except—they’ll be hiding in my dreams, awaiting my return. They’re such devious figments of my imagination.

I’ll set my sleep alarm to go off every ten minutes—too short to reach a REM dream state.

Who’s the clever one now?

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Who’s the clever one now? Why you are, Gary. Good one.

Nice little tale of one guy’s descent into sheer madness. A modern day Edgar Allen Poeish story. Good job.

I’m not sure that a psychotic would execute such a plan as stated in the last
    sentence.

Great story and well written. I think the connection between him not wanting to sleep and his de-evolution into madness could have been made a bit clearer.

My take is different. The wife, two kids, and the Shih Tzu are real. When he says he wakes up, he’s really going into his dream state — in order to escape the awful (for him) reality of marriage and children. The sleep alarm goes off each morning to make him face again the daily deadly dilemma of life.
