Ear Buds

Ear Buds

By Smila W. Planete

Ear buds in, music pulsating through her body, it’s a glorious day for a run.  Sun is shining; mountains are majestic.  She quickens the pace: around the corner, past the rose garden, up the shaded boulevard, across the manicured park. A nod to the Duke, flanked by his stately greyhounds. The palace is just ahead.

Totally exhausted, she yanks out the ear buds and collapses onto the sidewalk, careful to avoid the hypodermic needles, the used condoms—wondering if she should call 911 for the dude passed out in the dirt lot across the street, him and his two mangy mutts.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Good imagery: The seamier side of life as seen through the eyes of a dedicated jogger. Unusual, and I like it!

Great choice of details to contrast the two sides. Excellent work with conflict–inner vs outer. Nice writing :).
