The pod hissed open, revealing a body identical to Mara’s. Pale, perfect, untouched by her disease.
“Another failed cycle,” the technician muttered.
Mara touched her face, trembling. “What’s wrong with it?”
He didn’t look up. “It still remembers.”
The copy’s eyes flickered open, filled with fear. “I don’t want to die,” it whispered.
Mara turned away, bile rising in her throat. This was her third redo. How many more times could she erase herself?
The technician pressed an override. The copy’s plea stopped mid-scream.
Mara stepped into the rain, her reflection flickering in the puddles. She felt less human every time.
