“I’ll miss Michael,” Rosa says from the lectern. “Partly because he promised to fix my TV.”
Soft laughter ripples through the church. Though her words may sound cruel to strangers, Rosa knows the crowd gathered today understands.
“His life was a series of things he promised to do but never got around to,” she says. “Painting the neighbour’s fence. Learning to drive.”
She trails off, silence replacing laughter, as thoughts stray from the silly to the sombre. A much-loved life cut short.
“Michael promised he’d follow up on those blood tests,” Rosa says quietly. “He never got around to that, either.”
I enjoy humor with a dark tinge. I wrote a flash entitled “She Sleeps” that has similar characteristics. No, I don’t think I submitted it to you. I’m a little gun shy.
“Don’t put off ’til tomorrow what you can do today.”
Love this!
Nice twist at the end.
