“Keep your arms straight!” Steve yelled over the whine of the engine.
I braced myself and tried again, for the sixth time. But once again, the handle of the towrope flew out of my hands. I plowed into the water, face first.
“Again!” Steve barked as he steered the boat back around. “Tips out of the water! Lean back! Let the boat do the work!”
I really didn’t care about all that stuff. I only wanted to impress my girlfriend. But I’d had enough. I swam in.
“Why don’t I drive, and you take a turn?”
“No, thanks. I can’t ski.”
