Facing My Opponent

August 2, 2016 10 Comments

Facing My Opponent

By SueAnn Porter

Sweat cascades down my head as I pedal, one, two, three miles, uphill both ways. I race along on the treadmill to the beat of my iPod. My opponent’s picture, the one taped to my fridge, keeps my fists jabbing at the speed bag until my arms ache.

Dinner. I bite the dry chicken and force it down with soggy broccoli. Water, more water.

It’s time. Behind the ropes, my friends shout my name. We want this opponent taken down.

I step forward onto the Weight Watchers scale. I lost four pounds.

I’m happy to be a loser in this round.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Thanks – haha, I like the misdirection and humor here :D. And very zeitgeisty!

Lots of action and good imagery here. A good example of show and tell!

The story details are doled out at a good, steady pace. The mention of the ‘fridge’ early on works well to set up the ending, as it’s all about dieting, the fridge taking center stage in that battle. The rollercoaster of dieting will be familiar to many. Well done. Sue Ann.

I’m with the rest. This was engaging with a good rhythm and I liked the emotion conveyed by the soggy brocolli. My kind of story
