Family Recipe

October 7, 2024 9 Comments

By W. Glewicz

The key is fresh ingredients. Flour, butter, sugar, and spices mixed by hand. Add tart, newly picked apples from the grove out back. Oven to 350. Center metal rack.

Thirty minutes later, I take the pie from the oven and breathe it in. Perfection. Just like momma made it, and her momma before her.

I open the kitchen window a crack, place the pie on the sill, and wait.

It doesn’t take long. Never does.

The doorbell. A little boy and girl lost in the woods. They’re hungry.

I, too, know hunger. I invite them in.

It’s all in the ingredients.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Clever! Clever! Clever! And the climax “takes the cake”.

Very well done. The closing lines drive it home nicely, and I didn’t see it coming, which makes it even better.

Unexpected ending. And love how so much is said with so few words.
