Fate

By Krystyna Fedosejevs

We met under a cloudburst, passing each other from opposite directions. Snow magic between us. Glances exchanged, briefly.

I took your smile that day and tucked it into my mind. High school tried to make me let go. College eventually did.

Memory rekindled. Thought I saw you in a restaurant, a number of places. Deception. A longing. Something unattainable. Perhaps, not meant to be.

I return to where we first met. Rail tracks we walked along no longer in use. Distant trees, not the seedlings they once were.

Snowflakes speckle my windshield.

By my side, arm in arm, you. My husband.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Loved everything about this except “High school tried to make me let go. College eventually did.” College did what? Do you mean High school tried […] but college succeeded. That’s what I assume, but the phrasing is poor.

      Yes, that’s what I meant.

I think this is a lovely piece of writing. Lots of evocative imagery and a nice build.

I like the way everything is written and structured here. Every passage sets up a cinematic scene that gets completed by the phrases you chose to include. To top it all, beautiful short story, great job!

Thanks, Luq. I’m pleased you enjoyed my story. I have ideas for new ones for 2016.
