Final Warning

May 25, 2022 4 Comments

By Marjan

Molly’s eyes anxiously follow the nurse as she enters the postpartum room. Perspiration soaks her flimsy blue gown. She fights the urge to close her sleep-deprived eyes, afraid she will never wake up.

And she remembers her husband’s last words before he collapsed to the delivery room floor. “I am going to be sick.” She nibbles her lower lip.

The nurse approaches her bed, smiles, and places a hand on Molly’s shoulder. “The doctor says your husband will be just fine.”

Molly breathes a sigh of relief. But this is the last time she will invite Nate into the delivery room.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I broke out in laughter. At the beginning I was still wondering if her husband is going to die, though the words like postpartum, delivery room gave me the hints. The line “I’m going to be sick”, and “I will never invite Nate to into the delivery room” just tickled my funny bones.
