She could feel the heat on her face, even from across the field. Her hair was matted; the rest of her drenched with sweat, dirt, and gasoline.
Beside her, her sister Sandra laughed triumphantly.
“We did it! I can’t believe we did it, but we did! He’s gone!”
Sandra’s laughter carried through the field, mocking the house as it burned. Tammy was panting heavily and couldn’t control her giggles of glee.
They weren’t completely clear of danger yet—they still had to make their escape before the authorities arrived—but it had been a long time since she’d felt so free.
