Fishin’ Luck

Fishin’ Luck

By M D Smith IV

Grandpa tugged his line and smiled. “Nothin’ like fishing.”

Bobby listlessly cast his line. “It’d be more fun if we caught something.”

Sunlight danced across the old man’s bald head. “Some days are like this, you just meditate and relax.”

Grandpa didn’t notice Bobby’s twitching feet, bouncing knee, or his yawn.

A knockout girl with long brown hair wearing a checked shirt and form-fitting jeans dangled her feet from the dock across the lake. She fixed a lure to her fishing line.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes?”

“I bet fishing’s better across the lake. Closer to that dock. Why don’t we row on over?”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Gosh, it’s 2020 and girls are still just there to keep boys from getting bored… They don’t even deserve names, it seems

This is a flash story about a restless boy fishing with his grandfather. He haven’t met the girl in question yet so naming her wouldn’t make sense.

Very nice. I bet Grandpa saw right through Bobby’s “fishing’s better across the lake” ruse!
