Five Brothers

May 23, 2022 8 Comments

By S. Webb

The sun was baking the dirt under his bare feet when Jack Junior tripped over the bloody body. Disturbed in their feast, the flies buzzed angrily in protest. The weapon, a large rock lying next to the head, was covered with gore. There was no mercy from the summer sun and soon the corpse would engorge. Desperate and panicked, Jack enlisted his four brothers with the grisly task of disposing of the body. They buried him deep in the backyard. The years of abuse and misery at the hands of Jack Senior were over, but Momma had disappeared in the night.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

The starting lines at the start with flies feasting over the body and the ending lines where boys bury their father’s corpse are awk-striking. Brilliant!

Thank you! This submission an excerpt from a full length novel I am working on but I thought it worked well for the 101 submission criteria. The editor was great to work with to make it fit within the confines of 101 words.
