This seemingly harmless piece tossed random, isolated details all along the storyline until the very last line where a bizarre unveiling occurred. What’s more, the pun that the crux of the piece turned out to be was quite a thrill.

An intriguing tale thriving on familial hypocrisy and social make-believe. The narrative is fierce in action perhaps as much as it provokes the reader’s contemplation.

What would be more thumbs-up-deserving than the apt single-word caption of this piece is how, all the way through, the writer mentally got me looking the other way!
“The Mapmaker’s Calligraphist Daughter” by Bob Thurber via 50-Word Stories
With this ultra-short piece, the author deftly transcends the constraint of word limit to produce a story way bigger than itself.
Always worth looking! “The Mapmaker’s Calligraphist Daughter” won the prize for me today.
Not sure about “Weird Little Girl.” I’m not particularly PC, but it appeared to denigrate the child’s culture for the sake of a punch line. Well-written but hard to enjoy.
