The flu had been hard on James. For the second night in a row, he awoke suddenly, drenched in sweat. Another terrible dream: flashes of a sharp, silver knife repeatedly slashing thick flesh. Blood covered the recliner where a woman slumped, motionless.
“Thank god,” James whispered. “Just a dream.”
James had dreamt similar violence before—disturbing visions of rope-gripped strangulation and an occasional pillow smothering—always when he was sick.
He shook his head, and rose to grab a drink of water from the bathroom faucet.
Switching on the light, James froze at his mirrored image.
He was covered in blood.
