Fondant Fancies

January 30, 2024 10 Comments

By Claire L. Marsh

Lucy’s eyes grew wide.

“They’re for guests, not you,” her mother scolded. “Your milkshake and ice-cream yesterday would turn Cruella sweet.”

Transfixing her with their pink and yellow icing, delicate petals beckoned, like party dresses or Disney princesses. Lucy couldn’t pick the prettiest.

As guests arrived, she sat quietly with her colouring book and salad, an abundance of green. Until Pip came, sauntering under the table. Sliding to the floor, Lucy saw a woman secretly feeding the puppy chicken. Lucy crawled along, stopping at those same legs. A smiling face peered down.

“Woof…cake…” Lucy whispered, her mouth open in anticipation.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Sweet, beautiful story…reminded me, nostalgically, of when I made my six year old daughter, Gricel, a carved-from a carton and painted little house that she went over wild in happiness for. Thank you, Claire, for making my heart sing again. Keep sending them.

Hi Cathy. Well, “do more” is clearly an order so I can’t possibly decline and neither can 101, they’ll have to publish them (I’ll note you said so!). Thank you for reading and commenting, I really appreciate the support.
