Free Parking

Free Parking

By Richard Edenfield

I was playing Donald Trump at Monopoly.

There was a contest in Iowa between real estate agents for a chance to play Trump as publicity stunt for his campaign.

I won.

I had only played Monopoly once with my daughter.

I lost.

There were cameras everywhere and lights set up on the board like it was a small boxing ring.

I got the blue properties. He got most everything else. I also got railroads. He kept landing on my property. After 15 hours, I prevailed. I felt like Rocky. Just a regular guy, bruised and beaten, but still standing…

on boardwalk.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I’d settle for a shack on Connecticut Ave where I don’t have to mow the lawn and can goof off and write most of the day. Did you play the version where landing on free parking gets you all the money piled up from fines, etc.? It’s not an official Parker Bros rule, but makes for a luckier game. I bet Donald likes to bend the rules.

Really like the piece, btw. Playful, poignant, timely. All that.

Thank you for taking time to comment. We always just gave 500 for anyone that landed on free parking when my family played. Yes, Connecticut Ave is where all the writers live. I think Bukowki lived there. I just sleep under the boardwalk and watch the cute girls walk by.

Nice structure and detail. Love the timely, intelligent humor. Where can we find more of your writing?

Thank you. No place right now to find more of my writing. But thanks for interest.
