Free will is a gift, and we live as our hearts desire. Forever hippies, taboo’s foes, we say love is our God, and believe that babies bring an end to liberty. Childfree, we run away, just the two of us. This is our choice and nobody should judge us. Nobody should care.
Then the two of us jam into the van in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere. Two bottles of wine drain empty as cheesy radio songs melt our minds together. You forget your pills; I forget my rubbers, and the choice is no longer ours.
Did these two people end their lives? What do “rubbers” mean here?
The voice at the beginning sounds a bit assertive, confident, but in the end they were just humans talking about things they wished to be but couldn’t make them go their way. The last line struck a chord…
Thank you for reading, Chieh! Indeed, the voice changes when the main character’s mind shifts from surprise. You noticed it, how lovely.
Rubbers are condoms in USA. Their choice of being child free is no longer.
Haha, I see. That changes how I interpret it! That’s when we call them “accidents”. Lol
Hey, I love how it goes. The end struck me though, gave some food for brains.
Very deep context. This story has layers. What is human’s freedom? Good question, bravo!
Thanks, bro. Your thoughts count!
It’s amazing how much you’ve been able to portrait with such few words.
Chapeau!
Hey, Claus. Thanks for being with my story, and for your thoughts on it 🙂
Nicely done! For me, it illuminates the self-assurance of youth and the lesson that our ability to control our destiny at all times is rather more complicated.
Teresa, hi! Million of thanks and smiles for being with my story
I was hooked from the start. “Forever hippies, taboo’s foes.”
Your brief words packed a punch. I felt that freedom of youth- flowers in my hair, braless, defying the establishment. Then, bam,
“… bottles of wine drain empty… cheesy radio songs melt our minds together,” life alters in a mere moment.
Brief, yet poignant. Bravo!
Many thanks, Linda. I’m touched by your comment ??
Sorry, there was supposed to be emoji not ?? 😀
This is excellent! We plan; the gods laugh.
Yes, exactly! Thank you ?
Why choose if you can’t actually choose?
I see it now. I thought the first paragraph was about them getting an abortion. Clarified on my own! Clever story!
I think we choose every second of our lives, we just don’t realize it or don’t want to bother, then have to deal with the consequences.
I completely agree. Awesome work.
Great story! I liked it.
I see it as the 60s where everyone was ‘free’ and everyone made their own choices. Then came the time when a baby came into the picture and abortion was not the choice. Thank you for growing up!
I like the contrast that you drew. Well done!
