Gears

By Gears

There’s a mechanism inside me which silenced eighty-nine years of my life. Sure I said words, safe phrases, such as, “The cat’s fur feels soft,” and, “Please pass the potatoes,” but never anything upsetting or odious. I couldn’t bear offending anyone, especially you.

But when you wanted him to be perfect too, I flipped the lever, gears nearly atrophied, without hesitation.

No longer will I operate without feeling something innately profound. No longer will you scare me into senseless solitary stillness. You will never silence his splendor either. There’s a mechanism inside me that allows me to speak with integrity, finally.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I like this. Made me think of how many things I put up with or let pass without my opinion, but once I became a mom I found my voice. What was once okay to have happen to me is not okay to happen to my son. Was that what you were conveying? You’re writing really made me think and connect right away. I was right there with you. Thanks for sharing story.

This comes across as more of a diary entry than a shirt story…….

Ah, that delicate little moment when one realizes he/she has a voice of his/her own! Great job!
