Going Off-Track

February 9, 2025 5 Comments

By Toni M. Roucka

“Steps don’t count if you don’t log them in,” Fanny will say. She’s inseparable from her Fitbit. I forget mine most days, so my gouty feet get little credit.

Fanny sports a snow-white pixie, like a shock-resistant helmet. My smokey frizz is fierce. She’ll insist I see her hairdresser. “Shirley can fix you.”

Fanny picks Rosebud’s for lunch, where her Fitbit steps will glow crimson against white linen. She will order an egg-white omelet. I usually order grilled cheese. Today, though, I’m ordering lobster bisque into which my Fitbit will ‘accidentally’ plunge before she asks, “What’s your step count today, Pearl?”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.
