Mother Gazelle, thoroughly parched and still reeling from labor pains, straightens her limb hind legs slowly. As she watches her newborn daughter, white, sticky, limp away so joyously into the vast open field, struggle to adapt, in an instant, to the dust, the bush, and the heat, she blinks back hot tears of gratitude and hopes, in her beating heart, that this one survives somehow…lives long enough to bring forth fine offspring of her own. Prays so fervently that she, too, learns fast, in the long dreary days ahead…whom to trust; when to run; and, yes, where to hide.
Evocative, nicely done.
Thanks. Really appreciate the feedback all the way from Kenya!
Interesting. All of this in 3 sentences: the wonder of life, the challenges of survival. Well done.
Exquisite. So simple and yet full of meaning.
Thanks both. Welcome to Kenya,
The mother’s guilt is such an interesting layer. What a concept! Hello from the US!
