Hanging in There

Hanging in There

By Devora H

Mildy lies swathed in colourless tubes. A large oxygen mask covers her face. Her breathing laboured; her friends stand vigil. Someone had gone to look for her when she failed to show up for work. A bug is eating at her innards.

Before this, she was a congenial receptionist.

She hovers between being and not being, desperately yanking at the tubes.

Mildy sobs when she sees her friends and colleagues, clothed in protective gear. She begs someone for a cool coke.

The machine beeps beside her. In her daze, Mildy puts her hand to her ear.

“Hello, hello, who is speaking?”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Nice. I’m intrigued by the name choice.

Great job on ‘hovering between being and not being’. Trying to amswer her beeping machine is very much ingrained into who she is / was.
