Hard Landing

Hard Landing

By Matt Brauer

Commander Bobby McTrue clutched the steel bars, bracing for impact. He helmed the Venti for five years; this would be his first hard landing.

His thoughts flashed to his first clumsy command of the vehicle, his increased confidence and journey lengths, and his flawless flight of his current mission. His mind paused on that feeling: flight, weightlessness, soaring through vast openness. The reverie lasted a moment, but seemed like hours to him. Earth impact jolted him to reality.

“Cool, you jumped eight feet!” Josh exclaimed.

Bobby looked back at the ramp, looked down at his bicycle, and thought, Best mission ever.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Enjoyed it! Reminded me of James Thurber’s classic daydreamer short story, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
