He opens her email, smiling expectantly. It’s always a joy to hear from her. Even her briefest notes are witty and often make him laugh out loud.
He reads the first words, “Hard news, friends.” His heart races as he continues: a diagnosis of breast cancer, but “it’s contained and can be plucked out with no follow-up stuff.”
He thinks to call, but she’s asking everyone to wait a bit. Instead he hits the reply icon and stares through watery eyes, trying to figure out what to say.
Moments pass. Finally he types simply, ‘Well, shoot. Love, Parker’ and presses send.
