Headwind

September 28, 2025 1 Comment

By Johannes Springenseiss

The westerly’s turning fierce, cold dew dripping down from tree leaves. It all seems to fold in on itself; my blunted-down mind is a zigzag labyrinth, a dazed Mobius snake biting its own head.

Runaway ideas are jostling to gain primary focus: spinning grotesque yarns to submit to lit-mags, joining another gym, getting the state sticker for the SUV, figuring out better ways to smoke venison and strip salmon roe.

I hesitate to go on. Memory whispers, the wrong path leads to the big kaboom, and oftentimes the right path’s missing. I feel stranded in dreary isolation.

Should’ve stayed in Milwaukee.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Beautiful imagery, and a spot-on description of thought processes.
