Hello

Hello

By Don Tassone

She waited on the landing, her hands gripping the metal railing. Her face burned with anticipation. Her pulse beat hard in her ears.

Why hadn’t she asked for his photo?

She scanned the men’s faces. Too young. Too old.

Then she saw him stepping up the escalator.

She knew his face instantly.

“Hello,” she said softly.

“Hello,” he replied warmly.

For 30 years she’d long to hold him, to look into his eyes, to know he was safe. But now she froze.

He sensed her unease and embraced her.

“I’m here,” he said, as their separateness fell away.

Love never fails.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Love can fail………the unrequited type that is.

Why did she need a photo…?
Why did she need to know he was safe…?
Where has he been for 30 years…?
    Husband, lover or son…?

We don’t need the story handed to us on a plate, but I think the reader would feel more connected with a small hint or two.

Thank you. You make a good point about “a small hint or two.” I’ll keep that in mind.

Wonderful story, Don. One word sums it up perfectly: HEART-WARMING.
