Hocking Hills

By Jeffrey Paolano

“Portia, you wanna take a trip?”

“Where?”

“Hocking Hills”

“What’s there?”

“Rocks, waterfalls. Mom took me as a kid.”

“You want a childhood flashback?”

“No, I want to talk to my mom.”

“Your mom’s been gone years.”

“Yes, but Mom said if I wanted to talk to her after she passed, I should come there to talk.”

“Tosh, she meant like praying.”

“No, she meant talk,” says Wendella.

“That’s weird.”

“I know, but Mom said I should go.”

“You’re just pining.”

“I’m sure of what she said.”

“Girl, that was long ago.”

“No, Mom told me last night. In my dream.”

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Few friends understand the truth unless faced with the reality of loosing someone close. Good story, Jeff.

Good story Jeff! I like the narrative, but perhaps could have used some sensory descriptions as well. Is this the Hocking Hills in Ohio? I’m from central Ohio and we were at Old Man’s cave just last fall.
