Holding Hands

Holding Hands

By Wayne Scheer

Oscar and Miriam held hands. His meaty hands were calloused from years of loading trucks. Still, he enjoyed feeling Miriam’s delicate-as-rice paper hand in his.

As they dashed to their car in the rain, he tightened his grip recalling a time thirty years earlier when a car, brakes squealing, skidded to a stop barely a foot from her. Now they automatically grabbed each other’s hand whenever crossing a street.

He felt her fingers between his, the way she did when he woke after heart surgery.

Oscar let go when they got to the car, but the impression of Miriam’s hand remained.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Sweet story. Minor, minor point: callous is not the same as callus.

Callous is UK spelling of callus – and also means ‘hard-hearted’ or ‘uncaring’. 🙂

Super duper. Applauding with both calloused hands.
