Home, Even Now

That night, the yellow lamp hung dim, as if refusing to witness. Biantara sat between his father and mother, waiting for his name to slip into a conversation that never paused.

Nothing arrived.

He lowered his gaze, stood, slid his chair too quietly to be noticed, then left, like something that had never existed.

In his room, he sat at the edge of the bed. The air felt heavy, as if the walls were holding his breath hostage.

His eyes struck an old photograph: three faces smiling, leaning close.

He stepped nearer, touching the cold glass. The smiles remained whole, untouched.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Great job. Great example of what isn’t said, beneath the surface. That night. What happened? The frozen smiling faces. What a way to show us they were happy. Well done

Happiness faded – because he grew up? Not a cute little kid anymore. Did he disappoint them with his choices? They accuse him by ignoring him.
