Finding the right living situation can be tricky for a young couple. We considered a variety of options before finally settling on this place. Although others had more square footage or better views or amenities like swimming pools and tennis courts, this was the only one with utilities, cable, and internet included. Would we prefer a bed instead of a foldout couch, an oven rather than a microwave? Of course! But this is all we can afford right now. Besides, there’s something about this place that really feels like home. Especially when Mom comes down the stairs to do her laundry.

Great piece. We’re on the other side of that story, moving into an ADU apartment under my mother-in-law after 23 years of marriage. We both have completely separate living spaces, but unlike other places, where hearing footsteps above would be a bother, I’m happy to hear her puttering around, doing laundry, chatting with friends. And instead of driving an hour, like we used to, now we trot upstairs for a cup of coffee. We can afford a different arrangement, but chose this one to be there for each other. I like that you kept it upbeat and sweet at the end.
