Horizon

By Rich L

It was the noise that caught his attention. Deep, old almost. And that out here in the company of whales and God knew what else. But it wasn’t them, he knew that much. Had it come back? Only two of the crew were left, the bosun and that bloody stowaway, and he had no idea where they were. The others…well, the thing was hungry. His eyes flickered momentarily to the blade of the penknife as the light of the candle caught its surface. His heart thumped, almost straining to escape, and he wondered, at last, how long he had left.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

I like the tension in ‘Horizon’; it sets up harrowing odds for the narrator’s survival. I would, however, add more intrigue about possible conflict with the shipmates. Grammar corrections would help.

Sorry, a lot of noise that failed to attract my attention.

Good beginning. Couldn’t figure out where the protagonist was. In a lifeboat? Couldn’t figure out the candle.

Nice, taut, suspenseful tale. It should be longer, and have more detail/resolution; but you only had 101 words to tell the whole thing. I think you did well!
