House Paint

House Paint

By Jeffrey Paolano

Below the off ramp sits a BP station. Within I ask, “Hi, this way to Burpar?”

The counter girl with a directional nod manages, “Four miles.”

I inquire at the Burpar General Dollar store, “Does Mr. Willingson, the artist, live out this way?” A congregation of customers and clerks confer then provide directions.

A macadam road carries me into the bucolic countryside.

As I approach the designated gravel lane, my apprehension heightens. No portent of majestic artistry is evident.

When I step from the Jeep, I behold the magnificence that has been wrought upon wooden slabs with house paint.

I weep.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

One little grumble: ‘bucolic countryside’ means countryside-ish countryside…
