Leave the cat lying alone on a cold metal table. Appreciate the soft blanket the doctor placed under her body before the final act. But notice it is the cold rimmed edge of the table pressing into your belly as you leaned to kiss her goodbye that follows you home.
Hang keys on a hook. Climb stairs. Put the carrier away in a closet. Avoid the bedroom where she slept. Close blinds you opened each morning so she could see out into the garden. Wash dishes. Make a cup of tea. Notice bits of soft calico fur buried in the carpet.
