Wade felt the G-forces as they left the surface of Goldilocks planet T9B23 behind. The aft viewer presented a stunning landscape of glorious colour and awe-inspiring geological features which shimmered through the heat of the burners. The combination elicited a certain wondrous melancholy.
As Medical Officer of the landing party, he’d had to do the retrieval. Body bags lay in a redundant heap. Absently, Wade rattled the desiccated contents of the sample sachet he was holding.
The infectious serenity had quickly dissipated. The voracious motile algae saw to that.
“Jeez, Wade,” Gunny scowled. “Show some respect. That’s still the landing party.”
Excellent piece of micro-fiction with a beginning, middle and an end. Entertaining.
