Hunter

Hunter

By Peter J.

Steam curled around Hunter’s nose, the air chilling his skin despite his coat. Rejected, he leaned against a towering pine and looked around. A gentle wind playfully waved the nearby branches.

He’d been kicked out. With nowhere else to go, this forest was his best choice. His brown eyes swept the area again. Hunter had to stay alert in these woods; they might come after him. He’d stepped out of line one too many times.

But he was hungry. Hunter could return to a place he wasn’t welcome—or strike out alone, into the forest.

The wolf padded away, decision made.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

One of the best surprised endings I’ve seen lately. Really a fantastic job, Carinna!

Nice work Carinna. I like the double entendre in the word “coat” which immediately makes readers think “human”. And I enjoyed my retrospective time in the wolf’s head.
So far, May’s Days is still my absolute favorite, not just of your pieces, but of all the 101 stories.

I really enjoyed this piece! It was the “coat” that led me astray, too:) Well thought!

An interesting perspective…the thinking of a wolf if a wolf indeed thinks the way a human does.

Thanks, I tried to make the thoughts simple but human-oriented, so it seemed more plausible.

Sweet and poignant. The word ‘padded’ was most effective – invoked sympathy
