Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy

By Vijai Pant

Ravi pressed on the accelerator. The car started its ascent. Entry toll at the hill station doubled after 3 p.m.

However, a few kilometers up, an anti-corruption procession blocked the road, resulting in time lost. “Things look so promising,” his wife gushed, looking at the crowd.

Moments later, they were at the toll barrier, barely five minutes late.

Resigned, Ravi reached for 100 rupees. His wife instantly rolled her window down. Thrusting a crumpled 50 rupee note into the man’s expecting hands, she remarked, “No receipt required.”

Promptly the barrier slid open and the vehicle sped away.

“Fifty saved,” she winked.

The Power of Imagery with Nina Schuyler

September 12 & 13 on Zoom
Enrollment closes Thursday, September 3 at 7:00 PM Pacific

If your descriptions are vivid but your stories still feel thin, this workshop is for you.

Join award-winning author Nina Schuyler to learn the difference between description, which tells a reader what things look like, and imagery, which carries plot, character, and meaning at the same time.

In just two days, you'll learn to choose images that hold emotion without naming it, pair them so each one deepens the other, and build patterns that gather meaning as the story moves.

Good story, but pay attention to your tenses. “Things look so…” or “Things looked so…” promising? Your story gave me an idea about using the times that my wife has saved my “bacon” to add character to my own writing.

Ah! a good story. 50 saved or 50 lost. Not sure but the canopy of corruption against which there was a procession had been supported by a hitchicker’s hand. Amused, literally amused. A great moral ….’Presence of mind, however, may tempt to be negligent too.’. Therefore, damn care, phoo!!!
