Dust motes danced in the tomb’s ancient light. He saw her, a ghost from his long gone university days in Marburg, by a hieroglyph-laden wall. Here in Egypt! Julia. Still impossibly radiant. His heart thumped a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Years melted away. He immediately rehearsed greetings in his head. Then, a sudden shadow fell. A man stepped beside her, his hand finding the curve of her hip. Julia turned, a soft smile gracing her lips as she met the newcomer’s gaze. The moment, so fragile, shattered. He stood frozen, the weight of unspoken words heavier than stones around them.
