My eyes spring open and struggle to find purchase in the dark. I sit up in bed to assess the room. I see nothing. My ears begin to strain, listening for noises that do not belong. I stay motionless…silent. Still nothing. Lightning strikes and thunder follows—making the entire house shiver. The things on my shelves shimmy and jingle. That must be what woke me.
Calmer, I settle back into my pillows. As lightning flashes, I brace myself for the coming thunder. My fear of the storm falls trivial as the burst of light reveals a figure standing in the corner.
Stands alone as a fine piece, but also as a preface to a horror story. Kudos.
This perfectly depicts our basic nightmares – well done.
Awesome and eerie, well written!
Goose bumps galore!
If that was the open chapter of a book, I’d buy it.
Love the phrase “shimmy and jingle.”
Shivery…
Great intro to a longer piece! It was chilling. Nice work.
such an unexpected and terrifying ending
