The iPhone illuminates his face. He stares at a picture of Laura. She’s smiling and gorgeous, her makeup fresh. Beside her, a dark outline that’s his cropped-out arm.
He recalls the day the photo was taken—a holiday in Pembrokeshire when they were together, happy.
On the app he’d downloaded to kill time, he considers sending a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘bouquet of roses.’ He’s curious to see who’s out there, no intention of selecting a match, really.
He lays his arm out, touching the pillow where she only slept weeks ago.
He swipes right, saying to the empty bedroom, “Goodbye, Laura.”
Evocative. Nicely done.

Did Laura die or did you dump her? I am intrigued. Is there going to be a second part to this where we find out?

Thank you so much for your comment and your interest in my story. I assure you, the character didn’t die. However, as it’s a piece of fiction, you’re free to interpret the gaps in whichever way you feel fits best. That’s the beauty of these short pieces.
Though I have my own backstory for this particular 101-piece, there won’t be a second part. That said, many of my short stories explore similar themes.
