The staircase seemed endless but the knight pressed on; his armor clanked with every lurching step, heavier by the moment.
“It’s no use!” The princess’s voice rang from behind as a fireball blazed past, missing him by inches. Its violent rush nearly drowned out her next words: “It’s a dead end!”
He didn’t care—it was the only escape. One step…another…finally the top of the tower. No time to pause or look back—he reached the edge and leapt, as massive talons snatched him from the air.
“Just in time!” he shouted to the dragon. “She nearly had me!”
