“It’s 75 now,” Pallavi gave the latest update.
“Good going. Bring it down a little more and mission accomplished,” the voice at the other end added encouragingly.
Pallavi kept quiet.
“Are you there?” he asked.
“Yes, Uncle,” she responded weakly, remembering the time when the Agnihotris had come home to ‘see’ her.
“She’s exactly the type of daughter-in-law we want,” Mrs. Agnihotri had then remarked, adding, “If she could just shed off a little.”
And ever since, Pallavi had been shedding weight to hold on to hope, with the Agnihotris still not committing.
“For how long will this continue?” Pallavi wondered.
That resonates.
Yep true, at least in our part of the world (India).
I can almost feel the frustration in the last line. Good one.
